Description: We are the only North Americans retailers to offer these beautiful freshwater nano crabs to the hobby. This rare freshwater species is a sheer delight to have in any tank. Although there is not much information out there about these little cutie pies, we’ve kept them long enough and personally observe them to see what characteristics they have.
They have such endearing personalities. Their short antennas near their eyes can move independently and make little letters like (I, L, -) it’s absolutely cute. When they eat they grab the food and hold it with their claws and tear it into small pieces to eat at a time. If we’ve ever seen a civilized animal the Pom Pom Crab (Ptychognathus Barbatus) is certainly that. They also eat off the filaments aka Pom Poms on their claws and their legs. Sometimes debris particles get lodged in there, so while they groom themselves they get a little snack. Win win right?
Having a gentle personality they get along with all other shrimp and fish, we keep them with red cherry shrimp and amano shrimps and have seen no aggression towards them. They do not tear up your plants, but they do eat the dead plants and take care of the string algae as well.
Care: Excellent scavengers that feed on biofilm, algae and organic matter in an established aquarium. For newer aquariums, you can use Podvodoy Snowflake 1-2x daily. The Pom Pom Crabs are hardy, friendly, and thrive in stable water. Java moss and hiding spots are highly advised in any tank with crabs. Also make sure to close up the tops of your aquariums! These little cutie pies love to climb.
